The National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, at the request and initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia, passed the Law on Archives and Archival Material on the 14th of January 2020 (published in Sl. Glasnik, number 6/2020), and the official implementation begins one year later. This Law regulates the system of protection of the archival and documentary material, determines the conditions and methods of use of archival material and determines the legal regulation on the electronic documents as well as the jurisdictions over the archives in the Republic of Serbia.
The Law specifically defines obligations of the founders of an archival institution, precisely regulates archives’ basic activities, determines professional titles in archival profession and introduces stiff penalties in order to protect and preserve archival material.
